OpenOffice.org screenshotOpenOffice.Org definitely deserves the first mention when it comes to open source software. Computers now days ALWAYS come with a trial version of the latest Office released by Microsoft. Be it 2003, 2007, and soon to be Office 2010. The only problem is, when these trials run out many people don’t want to spend all that money when they aren’t going to be using the suite very often, or when they just don’t want to pay that much money period. Luckily, with Open Office.Org you won’t have to pay the outrageous prices and you’ll still get ALMOST the same functionality as if you had the costly Microsoft Office suite.

With OpenOffice.org, rest assured you can do everything from creating word documents, to creating presentations like PowerPoint does. You can eve create spreadsheets and printable materials like brochures, business cards, and create labels with Avery templates.

Nice site Justin. I am here looking around and ran across your Open Office.org page and download. I used to have Open Office but I ran into the problem with others not being able to read my documents if they too, did not have Open Office. I went back to Microsoft and now use Microsoft Office 2007. I really enjoyed Open Office except for the compatibility issues. Is there anything new that alleviates this headache?

    Thanks

There sure is Mark! It’s something that should be defaulted in OpenOffice, but like all things, they make their software proprietary in hopes of getting people to tell their MS Office buddies to switch over, and by saying this, I’m assuming. But in order to use OpenOffice.org with MS Office, all you need to do is set one option to default to saving as a doc file then you are golden!
    Perform the following steps:

    Go to Tools
    click Options
then from left menu choose Load/Save then General.

Now, from right menu, at “Default file format” section, choose “Always save as” and select Microsoft Word XP.

From then on all your documents created in OpenOffice.org, will be saved as .doc!

    Hope this helps Mark!
